Urinary Crystals in Cats and What Every Cat Owner Needs to Know

If you’re like me, you probably haven’t thought too much about urinary crystals in cats. But if you have a cat who’s prone to cat urinary problems, you need to know more about cat bladder crystals.

Why Are Feline Urinary Crystals Important?

Even though these crystals are hard to see without a microscope, they have sharp edges which rub against the bladder walls, causing your cat’s bladder to become inflamed and irritated. This inflammation causes your kitty to show signs of a feline bladder infection.

Because a male cat has a long narrow urethra, it can easily become plugged if large numbers of feline urinary crystals are present. This is a veterinary emergency, as a cat that can’t pass urine will fall victim to a fatal case of uremic poisoning within a couple of days. Since it’s hard for an owner to tell if the cat is blocked or not, it’s important to have your cat examined by the vet if he has a feline urinary tract infection.

There are two main types of urinary crystals, struvite and calcium oxalate.

Struvite Crystals In Cats

Struvite crystals, which contain magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate, used to be very common in cats. This problem was thought to be a result of a diet with high levels of magnesium. Cat food manufacturers responded by producing diets lower in magnesium. Cats eating this food also produce more acidic urine. This helps to prevent the formation of struvite crystals, which are still the most common type of crystal that causes feline urinary blockage.

Although this dietary change helped to lower the incidence of struvite crystals in cats, now vets are seeing calcium oxalate crystals more often.

Why Do Some Cats Get Calcium Oxalate Crystals Instead?

Certain breeds of cats seem to have a genetic predisposition to developing calcium oxalate crystals if they’re fed a diet low in magnesium. This problem is often seen in Himalayans. It’s ironic that if you feed these cats a diet to prevent struvite stones, you’ll encourage the formation of calcium oxalate crystals instead.

This is why it’s so important to have a urinalysis done to find out what kind of crystals are present. You don’t want to feed your cat a diet that will encourage his body to form feline urinary crystals.

Can Urinary Crystals In Cats Be Prevented?

Cat owners can do several things to prevent their felines from developing cat urinary problems. The first is to feed your cat a high-quality canned food. People don’t realize that cats are meant to get most of their water from their food, which is why cats don’t seem to drink much water.

Canned food has a moisture level that’s much closer to what your cat would eat in the wild. You can also add a little water to the canned food to increase the moisture even more. Be sure your cat always has plenty of fresh, clean water available, too.

You may want to give your cat one of the many natural remedies for pets that are available now. These remedies support bladder health, along with lowering the risk of him developing a feline bladder infection. You’ll want to be sure to buy one that’s especially formulated for pets, and that’s safe enough to give your cat every day.

Make no mistake about it, if your cat has already had a feline urinary tract infection, you can’t afford to be ignorant about urinary crystals in cats. Take steps now to protect your cat’s health.

Acid Attack – Are Your Teeth In Danger?

Your teeth may be at risk. Did you know that consuming acidic foods and drinks can lead to acid erosion of your teeth? Once softened by acid exposure, your tooth enamel becomes weakened and can be more easily worn away, even by just brushing your teeth! If you tend to grind your teeth at night, you can quickly do some serious damage.

Often the first sign of this problem is increased sensitivity to cold air or liquids. Bouts of acid exposure will open up the pores on your teeth, and any areas of dentin exposure, such as root surfaces, can become very sensitive.

Teeth softened by acid are much more vulnerable to decay. That can mean a lot of extensive dental treatment.

Serious damage from acid doesn’t happen with a single exposure, and your teeth have some capacity to recover (re-mineralize). However, many repeated exposures can lead to severe, irreversible destruction of your teeth.

This is HUGE problem. I’m very alarmed by how much acid erosion and the resulting tooth sensitivity I’m seeing.

And most people have absolutely NO IDEA that it’s happening to them.

This is a Real Threat…

In the past few years, I have seen more and more patients who are presenting with this problem. One patient in particular, she was a new patient to my practice. Her teeth were worn right down to their gum line! Ouch! I also noticed that many younger adults who consume large quantities of cola drinks and their teeth were being decimated by tooth decay (more on that issue later).

This problem of acid erosion isn’t just age specific. I see a LOT of it in all ages, and it seems to be getting worse every year. Sure, people are living longer and keeping their natural teeth. Yet, that still doesn’t explain all the damage I’m seeing.

Beware the acid bombs!

A key factor in this “epidemic” of acid damage is our modern diet. Many of the foods and drinks that we consume contain highly elevated levels of acid.

Acids commonly added to our food include citric acid, acetic acid (vinegar), and phosphoric acid – all of which can significantly harm your enamel. So make sure you read the ingredients label.

Why are these acids being added?

In most cases, to assist in preservation. It’s widespread within the food industry.

Benzoic acid and its salt forms (sodium benzoate, potassium benzoate, etc.) are amongst the most widely used food preservative in the world. It’s cheap and very effective. Prolonged shelf life translates into higher profits. In the food industry, it is used in wide range of items from jams, juices and salad dressings to ice cream, soft drinks and candies. It’s also used in toothpaste, mouthwash, and as a rust inhibitor in anti-freeze.

Being weakly acidic, benzoic acid won’t harm your enamel directly. This chemical’s preservative effect is pH dependent – it works best in a low pH (acidic) environment. Other strong acids are being added to food and beverage products to establish a low enough pH for this preservative to work. Many food substances, such as soft drinks, ice cream, and candies, are being acidified (juiced up) this way. That’s the big, hidden acid spike many of us are being hit with!

On a further note, benzoic acid can combine with ascorbic acid (vitamin C)

to form benzene – a known carcinogen. Vitamin C is often added to food or beverage products as an anti-oxidant. These two ingredients are still being used together in a wide range of beverages throughout the World (fortunately banned in North America). Another good reason to read those ingredient labels.

Watch out for the Double Dose!

A high sugar and strong acid combo make some of these food and beverages particularly devastating for your teeth. Bacteria in your mouth can aggressively metabolize any available sugar to produce lactic acid. That means your teeth will be exposed to even more acid. That’s why a lot of children have re occurring decay. They constantly got hit with a double dose of acid from all the cola drinks they drink!

Diet drinks may be marginally easier on your teeth, but some sugar substitutes (aspartame) can add an extra punch to the acid attack on our bodies.

More than Just Our Teeth…

The harm from overexposure to acid only begins with our teeth. These synthetic “acid bombs” we’re consuming can alter our internal chemistry and dramatically affect our overall health.

Our bodies will attempt to compensate for this excess dietary acid, but at a price. Our alkaline reserves are gradually being depleted, and as that happens, we start suffering from the many consequences of chronic acidosis.

The following are some of the dangerous effects of chronic acidosis…

* Minerals (mainly calcium) are leeched from our organs and bones to neutralize the excess acid. As calcium is leeched from our bones, we can eventually suffer from osteoporosis.

* Our kidneys are overburdened by the acid buildup and experience higher incidence of kidney stones.

* Digestion suffers because excess systemic acid can inhibit the production of stomach acid as well as the alkalizing salts from the gall bladder and pancreas. We’re left with poorly digested, acidic food in our intestine that brings on cramping, bloating and risk of intestinal infections.

* Capillary blood flow slows down and the removal of acid waste on a cellular level is blocked, increasing the effects of cellular aging and raising the risk of cellular transmutation (cancer).

* Acid accumulation in the pancreas interferes with insulin production, leading to diabetes.

* Our energy levels drop off and we suffer from chronic fatigue.

* Fat accumulates around our vital organs (to protect them) and we put on extra weight.

Chronic acidosis has been cited as the hidden but deadly disease that’s the primary cause of many of the serious ailments we suffer from. Dr. Leigh Connealy states “Acidosis literally destroys the body from the inside out, paving the way for disease to take over.

Watch Out for These Acidic Foods!

Soft drinks (including lemon iced-tea)

Sports drinks – Gatorade, Powerade, etc.

Energy Drinks – Red Bull, Full Throttle, etc.

Citrus Fruits – lemons, limes, grapefruit, etc.

Fruit salad

Fruit juices – lemonade, grapefruit, orange, apple, cranberry, etc.

Chewable Vitamin C (never suck on them)

Candies (particularly sour candies)

Vinegar

Vinegar-based products such as salad dressing and ketchup

White or red wine

The Bottom Line: Loss of enamel is progressive. If left to advance, your teeth may become severely compromised.

What You Can Do:

* Be alarmed. Take this seriously and don’t let your teeth become casualties in the food wars. Pay attention to ingredients and start limiting your exposure to acidic food and beverages.

* Get real. Call junk food it what it is, not a “special treat” that you’ve earned. Avoid associating “comfort” with bad food choices. Try choosing healthy snack alternatives such as nuts and raw veggies

* Stop the pop! Find healthy alternatives, such as mineral water. If you do indulge, limit the frequency, time length, and concentration of acid exposure.

* Cut out the candy. Tame your sweet tooth before addiction consumes you. Sour candies, being dosed up with citric, malic, and/or tartaric acids, are extra nasty.

* Limit your exposure time. Eating or drinking something slowly throughout the day will do more harm than one big exposure.

* Water your juices down. Many juices have concentrated sugar and acid content, to the point that they cannot even quench your thirst. Consider adding at least half water (2/3 is my preference). Stay away from lemon iced-tea.

* Good Hygiene. Maintain brushing & flossing habits. Be sure to use fluoridated toothpaste to help strengthen your teeth. Avoid brushing your teeth immediately after consuming acidic foods or drinks, as this is when enamel is at its softest and most likely to be damaged. Simply rinse with water instead.

* We can help. Stay healthy and keep your teeth for life by keeping up your hygiene visits. We’ll keep tabs on acid damage. If the damage is already significant, we can help restore & protect the affected teeth with options such as bonding, porcelain veneers, or crowns.

Weight Loss Through Simple Home Remedies

Being overweight is quite certainly one of the greatest health risk people over the world are facing today. Medically, this condition is known as obesity. Obese people are very vulnerable to a large number of lethal diseases, such as atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems, diabetes, paralysis and gangrene. Hence, doctors and medical experts all over the world stress on maintaining a healthy weight to keep most diseases at bay.

In Ayurveda, there are several dietary and herbal techniques by which people can reduce weight. Just like it does in other treatments, Ayurveda does not believe in any kind of debilitating treatment methods; instead its treatments are centered on making the person lead a healthier lifestyle. The following article is about some of the best remedies and methods that people can do within their homes to achieve a healthier profile.

Treatment with Simple Home Remedies

Remedy # 1

This one is not actually a remedy, but it is the most important thing you must do in order to keep your weight in a normal level. And that is, stick to a healthy diet. The following are the dietary guidelines you must follow in order to keep your waistline healthy: -

1 Do not overindulge in eating any one type of food. Keep your diet balanced.

2 Keep the intake of sugars and fats to a minimum. The fats to be avoided are the saturated fats and the trans-fatty acids.

3 Too much carbohydrates build weight. Hence, the intake of rice and potatoes must be reduced. Wheat, barley and maize are ideal substitutes for rice in people who has weight problems.

4 You must have at least one bitter vegetable per day. This helps in the proper metabolism of fats and do not allow them to accumulate in the body.

5 Never eat to full capacity.

6 Consume a lot of fluids in the day. This helps to eliminate the undigested foods effectively.

7 Exercise is extremely important. It is necessary to indulge in mild physical activity after each meal even if you cannot make time to go to a gym.

Remedy # 2

Have a totally salt-free diet once a week. This helps reduce weight. Also skip a meal once in a month.

Remedy # 3

Prepare chutney of mint leaves. This must be taken with every single meal. It helps in the proper breaking down of the fats. Also begin your day with a cup of mint tea.

Remedy # 4

Vitamin C is very good for people who are looking to reduce their weight. Since amalaki (Emblica officinalis, Indian Gooseberry) is the best source of vitamin C in the world, it is good to eat two three fruits of the amalaki each day. Also have a glass of any one citrus fruit – orange, lemon, etc. – each day. Green leafy vegetables also have good vitamin C content. They can be consumed raw in the form of salads.

Remedy # 5

Honey is very good for mobilizing the fats in the body. Take a spoonful of honey half an hour after every meal. A good remedy is to mix a teaspoonful of honey and lemon juice and have it twice a day. Alternatively, you can take a bowl of warm water, put a teaspoonful each of honey and lemon juice and drink it in the morning on an empty stomach. This is a very good remedy to dissolve the excess fats.

Remedy # 6

The Indian plum, i.e. jambula, is renowned for its weight controlling properties. Jambula dissolves the excess fats and gets them properly utilized in the body. Take four leaves of the jambula plant and soak them in a glass of water overnight. In the morning, discard the leaves and drink the water on an empty stomach. If you do this everyday, then you will find a positive reduction in your weight in three weeks or a month.

Treatment with Special Ayurvedic Methods

Ayurvedic experts would first try to ascertain what dosha type the patient is, because the treatment of obesity depends on that. Generally, Vashti Karma is prescribed, a therapy that is quite like giving an enema. This flushes the toxins from the body. Then other methods are employed to reduce the excess fats.

There are various herbs and preparations that are prescribed in order to treat obese people. Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) and the Triphala choorna are definitely prescribed. It must be noted that the Triphala contains amalaki, bibhitaki and haritaki; all of which are extremely potent in dissolving the excess fats. Shilajit is also prescribed quite often, as it removes the unwanted constituents from the digestive system and provides the body with a good mineral balance that it requires. Most importantly, the significance of a healthy diet and an active lifestyle is stressed upon the patient.

Try Probiotics For Healthy Weight Loss

If you have not yet tried them, probiotics are a must if you want to remain healthy and at the same time lose some weight.

A probiotic is an organism, which is also known as ‘friendly’ or ‘healthy’ bacteria. A probiotic helps to balance the intestinal tract by killing the unhealthy bacteria.Taking a probiotic supplement for weight loss maintains a healthy intestine which can also prevent illness and disease.

Probiotics for weight loss can be found in most yoghurts and yoghurt based drinks. They are also found in lots of other foods too and can be found at supermarkets and are now highly advertised on the television. The most common probiotic for weight loss found today is called ‘acidophilus’ and is also available in capsule form. These healthy bacteria can prevent digestive problems and is also known to help Crohn’s disease sufferers.

Probiotics for weight loss also helps the thyroid gland which in turn helps the digestive system. This gives people with thyroid problems a much needed helping hand in losing their excess weight.

An important part in losing weight is to ensure that your digestive system is working to its best ability and probiotics for weight loss can do this. The over eating of yeast is a major factor of weight gain and by taking a probiotic for weight loss will prevent the pounds from piling on.

If you decide that taking a probiotic for weight loss you should always use the most effective strain of probiotics which creates an environment that yeasts cannot survive in. Pobitics for weight loss in capsule form should always be stored in the fridge to prevent them from ‘dying’ and becoming useless. These probiotics in capsule form can be purchased from most good health food shops or via the internet but remember that they must be kept cool so ensure the postage time is not too long or that the storage facilities are adequate.

Cuttlebone and Birds – 5 Reasons Why Cuttlebone is Good For Pet Birds

Are you in the process of adding a new pet bird to your family? If so then you may have some questions about what is needed to make your pet bird happy and healthy. Knowing how to properly care for your pet bird will definitely make your new task easier.   Many pet bird owners have questions about the need to buy additional items like cuttlebones, ladders, or mirrors. They know that many treats like swings, ropes and extra perches are all welcome additions for birds. They are also pretty sure that they can provide these things for their bird and be rewarded with a happier pet.

However, some owners are just not certain about purchasing a cuttlebone. Some may wonder if this avian treat is really a good idea. A cuttlebone is not only fun, but healthy and useful to pet birds of all sizes.   Here are 5 reasons why cuttlebone is good for pet birds.

1.  A cuttlebone is an object of curiosity and interest. It is something to explore and try out. Your bird will enjoy being able to peck and sample this treat, and this feature alone helps them occupy their time.

2.  Cuttlebones are good sources of dietary calcium. And some species require more than others. Check with your vet about your bird, as you may need to provide other sources of calcium in addition to the cuttlebone.

3.  The pecking and grinding action that occurs with a cuttlebone will help your bird trim their beak. This is a natural way for them to keep their beaks healthy.

4.  Some of the modern cuttlebone treats are now made with an outer layer of minerals. Look for the ones that are a color other than the usual white. And since birds, like us, enjoy food that is visually stimulating a colorful cuttlebone is another way to stimulate your bird.

5.  Having this type of chewable treat will help your bird use and strengthen the muscles in its jaw.  The colorful outer layer contains healthy, nutritious minerals. Inside is the inner layer of calcium. Be sure to check with your vet if you decide on a cuttlebone with minerals to make sure your bird gets only the correct amount of minerals needed to keep it healthy.

Cuttlebone is a healthy addition to the cage of pet birds, and although inexpensive, it serves many invaluable uses. It will definitely keep your bird happy, healthy and stimulated, which is a great recipe for a healthy pet bird.

Guinea Pig Diet – What Do Guinea Pigs Eat?

Guinea Pig Diet:

To ensure that your cavy lives a long, happy and prosperous life it is essential that your cavy maintains a healthy diet. A typical guinea pig diet consists of fresh water, hay, pellets, vitamin C and some fresh vegetables.

Vitamin C:

There are a few ways that your cavy gets Vitamin C. Guinea Pigs get Vitamin C from eating fresh vegetables and pellets; however this may not be enough. Guinea Pigs need approximately 10-30 mg of Vitamin C on a daily basis to prevent getting scurvy. If you feel that your guinea pig is not getting enough Vitamin C through their regular diet than we recommend giving them a small dosage of liquid vitamin C, or break up a small chewable vitamin C tablet and feed it to them directly.

It is important not to mix Vitamin C (or any supplements, or medications) in with the guinea pigs water. Vitamin C will change the flavor of the water and guinea pigs will not drink it. Furthermore, if they do drink it, they may not be drinking enough of it.

Fresh Water:

Change the water daily, replenish with fresh cold water; water from the faucet works just fine. You want to avoid distilled water, water with too much calcium in it and water with a high mineral content. The best way to supply the water is by using a vertical hanging water bottle to prevent spills and contamination.

Pellets:

Guinea Pig Food should be stored in a small ceramic, hard plastic bowl or in a small food storage bin specifically designed for small animals. It is recommended that guinea pig food gets changed daily and the bowl is cleaned daily as well. For this reason it is good to have 2-3 bowls for daily replenishment.

When selecting the proper food for your cavy read the ingredients carefully. Look for a guinea pig pellet food that has vitamin C in it, and avoid foods with a high amount of corn. Typically a cavy should eat 1/8 of a cup of pellets a day (check the package for recommended serving sizes) along with hay and some vegetables. Food should be stored in a cool dark place for proper preservation of freshness.

Most guinea pig pellets are primarily alfalfa which is great for young guinea pigs, and pregnant guinea pigs. Once your cavy has reached a year old switching to Timothy pellets is a good idea as it is lower in calcium which will prevent any issues with urinary-tract infections.

Hay:

An adequate amount of hay should always be provided at all times and is good for guinea pigs of all ages. Hay is not a substitute for pellets, and pellets are not a substitute for hay. Hay is essential to the diet of a guinea pig because it helps them naturally digest their food better, increase their fiber intake and reduce urinary-tract infections. A simple wire rack can be used to house the hay in the guinea pig cage.

There are two main types of Hay; alfalfa hay which is great for young guinea pigs and malnourished, pregnant and/or nursing cavy’s and timothy hay which is best for adult guinea pigs. Alfalfa has a high amount of calcium so it should only be given to adult guinea pigs once in awhile as a treat.

Vegetables:

One of the biggest cornerstones in your guinea pigs diet is fresh vegetables. Cavies should slowly be introduced to fresh vegetables (to avoid digestive problems), once cavies are familiar with vegetables you can start to mix a variety of them into your cavy’s diet.

Vegetables that guinea pigs can eat:

Romaine lettuce, green and red pepper, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, cantaloupe, dandelion greens, corn husks, clover, and many more.

This is just a short list of the vegetables your cavy can eat, but be creative there are many more that are not on this list that your guinea pig may really enjoy. It’s important that the vegetables you serve your guinea pig are fresh; don’t give them spoiled/wilted foods.

What to Know About Easy to Swallow Omega 3 Capsules

Almost on a daily basis, we’re being told about the health benefits of omega 3 fatty acids. Good for the brain, the cardiovascular system, skin, hair, nails….beneficial for specific health ailments like diabetes, weight control, asthma, autoimmune diseases and so forth.

However, a lot of people don’t like the taste of fish and have a problem swallowing large pills. Easy to swallow omega 3 capsules are a great way to get more of these essential fatty acids into our diet. If you buy a brand that’s not easy to swallow, chances are you won’t take it for long. On the other hand, if you expect to take fish by the spoonful like many people do cod liver oil, you well know the taste can be atrocious.

Some products make their fish oil enteric coated. This is entirely unnecessary. Enteric coating is a protective coating that protects the pill from your stomach acid so it doesn’t dissolve and become damaged. This allows the nutrients to be released in the bloodstream when it releases the intestines.

For certain nutrients, enteric coating is important but omega 3 fish oils are not one of them.

Enteric coating is also very hard and difficult to swallow. Easy to swallow omega 3 capsules should come as soft gels. These are the squishy, yellow looking capsules. They are pliable making them easy to swallow with a bit of water or juice, and don’t tend to scratch the throat when going down.

Also, for kids who can’t yet swallow even soft gels, the gelatin capsules can be cut rather easily and the fish oil can be squeezed out and fed directly…in a yogurt or other treat works well, and this is a method I have personally used for years to add omega 3 fish oils into my children’s diet and give them all the wonderful health benefits associated with these essential fats.

Depression and Anxiety – Best Foods to Lift Your Mood

In this article, I will be describing the best foods for relieving depression and anxiety, and improving your mood.

For detailed tips on nutritional supplements that can reduce anxiety and depression, see my other article entitled ‘Depression and Anxiety – Supplements Can Help!’

Compromised nervous system health is often seen in fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and many other conditions. Depression, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and emotional instability are often reported. These problems can be helped by augmenting the diet with foods that support nervous system health. Foods that heal and maintain the nervous system have many additional benefits, as well, including improvingcardiovascular health, hormonal balance, weight loss, etc.

First, A Few Basic Suggestions

You may know this already, but if you don’t, you should. There is no way around having a vision of your health goals, being clear in your intention to achieve them, and taking action to implement your goals. This should all come from desire, not making yourself feel like you are in boot camp. Healthy food can be savory, exercise enjoyable and satisfying. Be patient with yourself, and willing to stretch your limits.

Most important is reducing or eliminating foods that rob your body of nutrients. ‘Empty calorie foods’ such as white sugar, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, products made with white flour, and all manner of candy and processed foods are in this category. These so-called ‘foods’ are so lacking in nutrition that in order to process them, your body has to deplete its own nutritional resources. For example, sugar and soda pop will pull minerals out of your bones. Alcohol robs the body of vitamin C, B vitamins, often dangerously lowers magnesium levels, and damages brain cells and other nerve tissues. Is that what you really want?

Eat more fresh, raw foods. Unheated foods contain enzymes, which are needed for every process that takes place in the body, including nerve transmission. Our enzyme potential is limited, because enzymes are depleted when they are used for various functions in the body, including digestion. To improve and maintain good health, a constant supply of enzymes must be supplied through our diet. This becomes more important as we grow older, since our bodies’capacity for enzyme production tends to diminish with age.

Enzymes are destroyed when heated to 118 degrees farenheit. Therefore, cooked foods contain no enzymes. Cooked foods require a tremendous output of enzymes from our bodies in order to be digested and absorbed. If we eat a lot of cooked foods, enzyme potential that could be devoted toward producing metabolic enzymes which heal and repair the body, is instead used up to digest dead foods. By eating a wealth of raw, enzyme-rich foods, we add to our enzyme ‘bank account’ and have a lot more enzymes available for healing and repair.

Enhance Nervous System Health With these Foods

Deep sea cold water fish is the best source of DHA. DHA (an omega 3 essential fatty acid) is essential for proper brain, nervous system, and visual function. The brain is highly dependent on DHA. It helps increase serotonin in the brain. Maintaining high DHA levels can help prevent depression, memory loss, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Salmon is one of the best choices. Make sure to buy wild-caught salmon if at all possible. Farm-raised salmon is dosed with antibiotics, the meat artificially colored orange, raised in crowded pens and fed a diet of low-grade chow that salmon were not designed to eat. Wild-caught salmon and other fish are a far better source of omega 3 essential fatty acids and high quality protein than farm-raised.

Wild-caught salmon, walnuts, grass fed beef and dairy, and pasture raised fowl are great sources of omega 3 essential fatty acids. Omega 3’s are an important nutrient for maintaining cell membrane strength and integrity. Most peoples’ diets are far too weighted towards omega 6 essential fatty acids. This has been implicated in cancer and other serious conditions.

Raw aged cheeses like Emmenthaler, Gruyere, and Swiss from Switzerland – contain calcium, magnesium, and the vitamins A and D to help absorb the minerals. Calcium and magnesium are vital to nerve transmission, muscle contraction/ relaxation. Canned salmon or sardines are also good sources of these minerals, since they contain soft, chewable bones.

Dark chocolate is a great source of magnesium. When you buy chocolate, look for the kind with the least sugar (usually the darker chocolate).

Rare steak, uncooked egg yolks (can get in Caeser salad dressing), raw almonds, walnuts, and cashews are excellent sources of B-vitamins, which support healthy nerve function.

Egg yolks from naturally-raised chickens (w/o hormones and antibiotics) are one of the best sources of choline and inositol. The brain and nervous system benefits greatly from a diet rich in choline and inositol. Inositol has been shown to improve cognition in Alzheimer’s patients, to help relieve diabetic neuropathy, and to relieve depression and improve mood.

If you have adopted the erroneous belief that fat and cholesterol is bad and should be severely limited in the diet, you may think you should not eat many of the foods I have suggested here. After three decades of research, personal experimentation, and coaching many people, it is clear to me that most people feel better on a diet that includes some of the above foods. Very low-fat diets are dangerous for reasons I don’t have space to go into here. High quality protein and fats are important, especially for the function of the nervous system, and the immune system as well.

By optimizing your nutritional program and including foods that support nervous system healing and maintenance, it is possible to relieve the depression, anxiety, and the emotional instability that often accompanies compromised health. Be patient and consistent to achieve lasting results.
